SVI continues to evolve, embracing new avenues for cultural expression and community outreach, and remains a vital institution for the Ukrainian Canadian community, the local Toronto community, and newcomers from Ukraine.

The Role:
St. Volodymyr Institute (SVI) is seeking a Volunteer & Events Coordinator to oversee volunteer programming and on-the-ground event coordination and support across all SVI activities. This is a hands-on, people-facing role at the heart of SVI's operations. The right person is as comfortable building volunteer systems behind the scenes as they are directing a team on a busy event night. This position reports to the Executive Director and works closely with SVI staff to ensure programming runs smoothly, translating vision into execution and serving as the operational anchor across events and volunteer activities.  

Responsibilities:‍ ‍

  • Volunteer Program Management

  • Recruit, onboard, and retain volunteers across all SVI program areas

  • Build and maintain relationships with universities, cultural organizations, and community groups to grow and diversify the volunteer base

  • Conduct volunteer orientations and maintain clear onboarding processes

  • Maintain a volunteer database tracking skills, availability, hours, and participation

  • Coordinate volunteers to support SVI’s wide range of activities, including event setup and cleanup, décor and inventory management, front-of-house support, member campaigns, and historical archive sorting and digitization

Event Coordination & On-Site Management

  • Play a central coordination role at SVI's annual and recurring events, including Toronto Ukrainian Film Festival, the Bloor West Village Toronto Ukrainian Festival, the Holodomor Commemoration, special programs like INSTITUT, and exhibition openings

  • Coordinate volunteer deployment and logistics for all SVI activities requiring volunteers

  • Act as the lead floor manager at events, briefing volunteers, troubleshooting in real time, and ensuring a positive experience for both volunteers and attendees

  • Provide support in project and operational follow-through, by tracking action items, coordinating logistics with partners, and ensuring that programming commitments are executed on time

Partner Coordination

  • Liaise with partner organizations on shared volunteer and event needs

  • Support logistics for visiting artists, academics, curators, performers, and community guests

Requirements:

  • 2–3 years of experience in event coordination, volunteer management, or a related field

  • Proven ability to lead and direct people in a live event environment Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Genuine interest in Ukrainian culture and the Toronto arts, education, and community sector

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small, collaborative team

  • Proficiency in basic office and communication tools (Google Suite, email, spreadsheets)

  • Excellent written and spoken English; fluency in Ukrainian is an asset

  • Flexible availability including Thursday evenings, with additional availability for occasional weeknights and weekends.

This is a part-time position, 4 days per week (32 hours), with the expectation of availability during major events and the potential to be compensated with additional pay or in lieu time. Immediate start available.

Compensation:

$24.00–28.00 per hour, commensurate with experience Location: SVI, 620 Spadina Avenue, Toronto, and off-site events
