Retro Malanka 2026

In January, St. Volodymyr Institute welcomed the old New Year with Retro Malanka, a night that brought together music, tradition, and community in a warm, nostalgic atmosphere.

Drawing inspiration from SVI’s own history, the evening was set among original décor from the 1970s through the 1990s. Guests arrived dressed in Retro Ukrainian Formal and Retro Canadian Formal, transforming the space into a living archive of styles, stories, and shared celebration.

The Music

From atmospheric jazz to beloved community voices, the program underscored what Malanka does best: bringing generations together through sound. We want to thank our performers: Tymish Koznarsky Band, the Christmas Star carolers, Prut River Boys, and the SVI Student Group for shaping the rhythm of the night, moving seamlessly between nostalgic and festive.

The Atmosphere

This year, we embraced SVI’s retro spirit by decorating the auditorium entirely with items from our own archives and storage, rather than purchasing new décor. The result was a setting that felt both nostalgic and imaginative.

We want to recognize Odarka Chudoba for creating the striking centrepieces adorned with peacock feathers, masks, and gold accents, while shiny green tablecloths set a bold visual tone. Archival books, posters, and vinyl records were woven throughout the space as decorative elements, turning the hall into a living archive.

The Community

Retro Malanka was, above all, about gathering. Old friends reunited, new connections formed, and the room carried the kind of energy that only comes from shared ritual. From spontaneous dancing to quiet moments of conversation, the night reflected the strength and warmth of SVI’s community.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to welcome the old-new year together. We’re grateful for your presence, your style, and your spirit, and we look forward to many more celebrations ahead.
